NUMBERING

The Scots Peerage designates this David Wemyss as the 3rd Earl of Wemyss, excluding, one presumes, Margaret Wemyss who was Countess in her own right. 1

David married Anna DOUGLAS, daughter of William DOUGLAS 3rd Earl, then Marquess, then Duke of Queensberry and Isabel DOUGLAS, 13 August 1697(contract).1 (Anna DOUGLAS was born about 1680 and died on 13 February 1700 1.). The cause of her death was burn injuries.1

  Marriage Notes:

"He (David Wemyss) married, first (contract 13 August 1697), Anna Douglas, only daughter of William, first Duke of Queensberry, with a dowry of 100,000 merks. It was through this marriage that Francis, sixth Earl of Wemyss, succeeded in 1810 to the estates of Neidpath and others in Peeblesshire .... Lady Elcho met a tragic fate only two years after her marriage. On 13 February 1700 her clothes caught fire, and she sustained such injuries that she died ten days later."

from Scots Peerage (vol 8) 1

David next married Mary ROBINSON about 1708.1 (Mary ROBINSON was born about 1685 and died before 8 September 1712 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"The Earl married, secondly, about 1708, Mary Robinson, eldest daughter and coheiress of Sir John Robinson of Farmingwood, co. Northampton, Baronet. But though she had large estates, it was found at her death, which took place, without issue, before 8 September 1712, that her property was so burdened that no profit came to the Earl."

from Scots Peerage (vol 8) 1

David next married Elizabeth SINCLAIR, daughter of Henry SINCLAIR Lord Herdmanston and 11th Lord Sinclair and Barbara COCKBURN, 5 July 1716(contract).1 (Elizabeth SINCLAIR was born about 1698 and died in 1721 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (David Wemyss) married, thirdly (contract 5 July 1716), Elizabeth, daughter of Henry, Lord Sinclair, with a toclier of 9000 merks. She survived her husband only a short time, dying in 1721."

from Scots Peerage (vol 8) 1
