"1626 February 14 Sir George Auchinleck of Balmanno

Son of Sir William Auchinleck of Balmanno, and grandson of Sir George Auchinleck of Balmanno, who was the nephew and Favourite of the Regent Morton. He was one of the Commissioners for the shire of Perth in the Parliament of 1617. On the 14th February 1626 he was admitted an Ordinary Lord in the place of the Earl of Lauderdale superseded. He was adjoined to a commission appointed to revise the laws in 1630, and was in 1633 employed with others to inquire into the honours and dignities anciently belonging to the office of High Admiral, then revived in the person of the Duke of Lennox. He died before the 23d February 1639, when Sir James Carmichael was presented to the place vacant by his deceased."

" 'A warrand from the counsall was presented to the justice, for continewing the dyet to the 2 July next to come, warrand dated Edr 2 Mar. 1624. The warrand states that the lords of Secrit Counsall, for some special considerations moving them, ordains to continue the action appointed to Dame Margaret Ogilvie, Countess of Merschell, Sir Alexr. Strauchane of Thornetoun, hir spous, and vtheris persones specifeit in the criminal letteris, taking new caution for their compearance. Sir George Affleck of Balmanno, knight, becomes security for the Countess, Sir Alexander Strauchane, and Mr Rot. Strauchane, doctour in phisick.' " (page 44)

In a 1627 copy of a letter, in Douglas Correspondence, from Sir George Auchinleck, Lord Balmanno, to William Douglas, eleventh Earl of Angus, concerning the lands of Auchinleck, Lord Balmanno states that Sir William Douglas of Braidwood and Elizabeth Auchinleck, his wife, were infeft in the lands by

"Mr John Auchinlek, father-brother to the said Elizabeth."

He continues:

"This Mr John had a sone callit James Auchinlek, quha maried ane of the thrie dochteris and airis of umquhill Sir Adame Hepburn of Craigis, and thairby acquyirit the third part of the said Sir Adame Hepburnis landis. The said James begat on the said heretrix Hepburn a sone callit William, quha succeedit to his mother in the third part landis pertening to the said Umquhill Sir Adame, and was callit Laird of Schethin. This William had no airis maill, bot five dochteris, quha war all maried, and hes childrene come of thame: bot in his awin tyme, he sauld his land to my father, and, with the pryce thairof, tocherit his dochters."

George married Isobel MELVILLE, daughter of John MELVILLE 5th of Raith and Isobel LUNDIE, January 1588(1589).1 2 (Isobel MELVILLE was born about 1555 and died on 21 December 1593 in Pitterichie, Glenbervie parish, Kincardineshire, Scotland 1.)

"In 1588 another agreement was made between the elder Melville (John Melville) and his wife (Isobel Lundie) and the younger Melville, restating the terms of the previous contract, but omitting the clauses as to the two jointures chargeable on the estate. The provisions for the laird's younger children are also more clearly defined, and arrangements made for their payment. In the following January Isobel Melville, daughter of the laird, married George Auchinleck, son of George Auchinleck of Balmanno. Her father promised with her a dowry of 5000 merks."

George next married Sarah DOUGLAS, daughter of Sir William DOUGLAS 9th Earl of Angus and Giles GRAHAM, by 1 March 1597.3 4 (Sarah DOUGLAS was born about 1568.)

On the 1st March 1597, a contract respecting the exchange of certain lands was entered into between Alexander Strachan of Thornton on the one part, and Sara Douglas, relict of Robert Strachan, son and heir-apparent of the said Alexander Strachan, with consent of George Auchinleck of Balmanno, now her spouse, on the other part (General Register of Deeds, vol.lv.)." George next married Katherine MENTEITH 'of Kerse' before 5 May 1629.5 (Katherine MENTEITH 'of Kerse' was born about 1580.)


  Marriage Notes:

Sir Andrew (Murray) died in December 1624, having married (contract dated 18 and 19 April 1600) Katherine daughter of Sir William Menteith of Kers. She married, secondly, before 5 May 1629, Sir George Auchinleck of Balmanno, a Senator of the College of Justice."
