The King etc., has granted to George Auchinleck of Balmanno a third part of the lands and barony of Polygony (Balgownie), with the tenants, etc. etc., mills and multures of the same, and a third part of the lands of Schethin, Little Meldrum, Fingask, a third part of the fishing of one boat, the fish in the sea harbour of Pittendrum, incorporated together, also another third part of the said lands and barony viz. Balgownie, Murcar, Westfield, with the calling of a chaplainry at the altar of St Dominic founded within the cathedral of Aberdeen at alternate times, a third part of the second part of the lands and barony of Dunlop, with their mills, multures, tenants etc., the patronage of the church of Dunlop, in the county of Forfar; which William Auchinleck of Schethin has personally resigned: to be held by the said George and his heirs male legitimately begotten of his body, failing which, by Archibald Auchinleck his brother and the heirs etc, failing which, by John Auchinleck his brother and the heirs etc., failing which, by Adam Auchinleck his brother and his heirs etc., failing which, by James Auchinleck his brother and the heirs etc., failing which, by the nearer and legitimate male heirs of the said George Auchinleck whomsoever, bearing the arms and name of Auchinleck, failing which, by the nearer and legitimate heirs or assignees of the said George Auchinleck whomsoever. In return for the laws, service owed and customs: - reserving to the said William the life tenement and to Eliz Cheyne his spouse, the liferent of the towns and lands of Polygowny, Murcar, Westfield, the corn mills and fulling mills and the Ailhous-croft of the same, Fingask, Chapelhill and the mills of the same, with the reasonable terce of the remainder, when it should happen. George married Daughter DOUGLAS, daughter of Sir George DOUGLAS of Pittendreigh, Master of Angus and Unknown.1 (Daughter DOUGLAS was born about 1517.)

"The four natural daughters of Sir George Douglas of Pittendriech were

1. Elizabeth, whose mother was the Lady Dundas, and who married James Richardson, laird of Smeaton, and had issue.

2. Margaret, whose mother was Fowler, in Edinburgh. Margaret married Sir John Carmichael of that Ilk, and had issue.

3. Douglas, who married Sir George Auchinleck of Balmanno.

4. Douglas, whose mother was the wife of the 'Laird of Barraes.' She married Sir John Selby of Twizel in Northumberland, and had issue."

George next married Jean ERSKINE, daughter of Sir Alexander ERSKINE Baron of Gogar and Margaret HOME.2 (Jean ERSKINE was born about 1571.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Jean, married, first, to George Auchinleck of Balmanno. She had a charter from him, as his future spouse, of the lands of Fingask, co. Aberdeen, in liferent, 21 February 1592-93. He died 3 November 1596, and she was married, secondly, as third wife, before 6 July 1598, when a certificate was granted by Mr. John Lindsay, minister of Lethnot, that he had celebrated the marriage, to John Leslie of Balquhan."
