User ID: M332. General Notes: "ROBERT, fifth Lord Maxwell .... was served heir to his father 4 November 1513. At various dates between 1513 and 1534 he was made Keeper of Threave and Lochmaben Castles, Steward of Kirkcudbright, Warden of the West Marches, Provost of Edinburgh, Captain of the King's Guard, Master of the Royal Household, Chief Carver to the King, and an Extraordinary Lord of Session. He was one of the Regents during the King's absence in France in 1536 and 1537, and as Great Admiral of Scotland escorted Mary of Lorraine to Scotland in 1538. He was bailie of several Border and Galloway Abbeys, and held 'bonds of manrent ' to serve him in peace and war from many lairds in those parts." Robert married Janet DOUGLAS, daughter of Sir William DOUGLAS 6th of Drumlanrig and Elizabeth GORDON, by 1510.1 (Janet DOUGLAS was born about 1497.) Marriage Notes: "By agreement between his father and Sir William Douglas of Drumlanrig, he (Robert Maxwell) was to marry the latter's daughter Janet (with a tocher of 1000 pounds Scots) between 4 July 1509 and the following Candlemas." Robert next married Agnes STEWART Countess of Bothwell, daughter of Sir James STEWART 'Hearty', Earl of Buchan (3rd creation) and Lord Auchterhouse and Margaret MURRAY, between 1520 and 15 November 1525.1 (Agnes STEWART Countess of Bothwell was born about 1486 and died in February 1557 1.)
