User ID: M314. General Notes: "JOHN, third Lord Maxwell, bound himself, 7 February 1477-78, to maintain his mother Janet Forrester in certain lands assigned to her by his father. After his father (who survived him) had resigned in his favour, in 1478, the barony of Maxwell, he was generally called Lord Maxwell, and is therefore here placed among the holders of that title, though some genealogists only call him Master of Maxwell. Both father and son sat in Parliament 4 October 1479." John married Janet CRICHTON, daughter of Sir George CRICHTON Earl of Caithness and Janet BORTHWICK, about 1454.1 (Janet CRICHTON was born about 1436.) Marriage Notes: "He (John Maxwell) married about 1454, Janet, daughter of George (Crichton), Earl of Caithness, and had issue ...She resigned the lands of Barnton in favour of her son |
