  General Notes:

"HERBERT, first Lord Maxwell, was served heir to his father, the late Herbert Maxwell, Lord of Carlaverock, in the lands of Meikle Dripps, 16 October 1421. He was knighted at the coronation of James I. 21 April 1424.
'Dominus de Maxvel ' was present in Parliament in March 1429-30, but probably not as one of the then new order of Lords of Parliament, for he witnessed, 8 January 1440-41, a charter of John Lockhart as 'Herbert
de Maxwel, dominus de Carlaverock, miles
.' James II., however, calls Maxwell a Lord of Parliament in an instrument granting that dignity to Sir James Hamilton, 3 July 1445."
