Note: The Scots Peerage, volume 1, places Helen Arbuthnott as the daughter of the second viscount of Arbuthnott and his second wife. The dates are more consistent with this placing when it is considered that she married twice, and that her 1710 marriage was her second marriage. ^{1 2}

Helen next married John SPOTTISWOOD of that Ilk, Advocate in 1710.¹ (John SPOTTISWOOD of that Ilk, Advocate was baptised on 14 December 1667 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland,³ died in 1728 ¹ and was buried in 1728 in Greyfriars, Edinburgh, Scotland ¹.)
