"The acts of forfeiture were against the individual, and not necessarily against his family. This is made evident by an entry recorded in the Register of the Privy Seal, dated 30 November, 1580. That entry served as a

'Confirmation of Assignation dated 23 May, 1575 by James Muirhead sometime of Lachop to Margaret Muirhead his daughter of an annualrent of 65 merks alienated by him and Elizabeth (?) Hamilton his spouse by John Hamilton of Pedderisburne from the lands of Drumgalloch and Blakrig in the parish of Monkland, to be "intromitted with by her until the redemption thereof by a payment of 650 merks and 20 pounds of lent silver".The Sovereign gives this to her despite her father being forfeited.' "

Margaret married John HAMILTON 5th of Udston, son of John HAMILTON 4th of Udston and Margaret DALZELL, by 20 April 1593(charter).¹ (John HAMILTON 5th of Udston was born about 1567 and died before 5 December 1629 ³.)

"John of Udston, who had a charter 'Joanni Hamilton de Udston, filio et haeredi Willielmi,' of a tenement and garden in Hamilton, 20 April 1593. He married Margaret, daughter of James Muirhead of Lachop, in Lanarkshire, by Janet, sister of James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, who killed the Regent Murray. By her he had issue"

"The youngest daughter of James and Janet (Hamilton) Muirhead, Margaret, married John Hamilton, 6th of Udstoun circa 1592.(1.64) It is said that they had many descendants which included the Hamiltons of Udston (variously, Udston, Vdstone or Vdistone), the Hamiltons of Barncluth, the Hamiltons of Rosehall and Wishaw, and the Lord Belhaven. "
