In 1901 the census recorded Susan McGrattan, aged 43 years, living as head of the household at 66 Montgomerie Lane, Ardrossan, Ayrshire. She had been born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. With her lived her father Patrick McConvil, aged 64 years, and her five children aged between 5 years and 17 years. A boarder named Patrick Murphy aged 40 also lived with the family. ^{3 5}
