  Research Notes:

GEORGE GORDON AND MARJORY OR MARJORIE MOIR

In Aberdeenshire in the 1680s two different men named George Gordon married two different women named Marjory or Marjorie Moir. Each couple had children.

We read in volume 2 of House of Gordon about George Gordon 2nd laird of Sheelagreen and 1st of Rothney, of the family the Newton Gordon, who were cadets of Lesmoir,:
"George Gordon married (1) Helen, daughter of - Erskine of Rothnne (Newton MS.); and (2) before 1685, Marjorie (born 1657), daughter of John Moir, I. of Barnes (Mitchell Gill's Moir-Byres, p. 80)."

Elsewhere in House of Gordon we read about James Gordon who inherited Knocksespock:
"James ... was the eldest son of George Gordon of Knockespock, by his first wife, Mary, daughter of Dr. Moir of Scotstown. George was the second son of Harry of Auchlyne, who again was the fifth son of William Gordon, III. of Terpersie by his wife, a daughter of Gordon of Leichiston, son of James, I. of Lesmoir."

Now Dr William Moir of Scotstown did have a daughter Mary, but she was baptized in 1676, and the first legitimate child of George Gordon, later to purchased Knockespock, was baptized in 1687. The baptism records of George Gordon's children recorded only the father's name. However Dr Moir had several daughters among whom was Marjory, baptized in 1661. Mary and Marjory are misreported for each other on occasion with reference to earlyish records because the form 'mariore' was used, which in old handwriting is reasonably similar to 'maria' or 'marie', and this may be why James Gordon's mother was referred to as Mary.ROTHNEY 7

George had a relationship with Elspet MESS. (Elspet MESS was born about 1665.)

George next married Marjorie MORE, daughter of Dr William MOIR of Scotstoun, Doctor of Medicine and Margaret SKENE, on 20 December 1685 in Saint Nicholas parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1 2 (Marjorie MORE was baptised on 22 May 1661 in Saint Nicholas parish, Aberdeen, Scotland 5.)
