LEITH, Jean of Harthill 2 3
Other names for Jean were LEITH, Janet 4 and LEITH, Jean, Mrs.1 User ID: W719. General Notes: " ... .the then owner of Knockespock took for his second wife, Jean, daughter of Leith of Harthill, a lady celebrated for her beauty and no less for her attachment to her husband, as evinced under the most trying circumstances. He was considerably older than her, and when laid on a bed of sickness, she tended him with the utmost solicitude and affectionate care, till one night, overcome by anxiety and fatigue, she fell asleep beside him, and was awakened only to find that the mansion of Knockespock was in flames. All the servants had fled, and no assistance was near. Losing not a moment, she summoned all her strength, carried her suffering husband from the burning house, and laying him in a sheltered spot, returned, through the flames, at the greatest danger to herself, for plaids and other coverings, to wrap him from the cold. This affecting incident forms the subject of a ballad entitled 'Knockespock's Lady,' by the late William Thom, the weaver-poet of Inverury." Jean married George GORDON 8th of Knockespock (2nd line), Burgess of Aberdeen, son of Harry GORDON of Auchlyne and Marjorie INNES of Auchlyne, on 23 June 1720 in Rayne parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 2 (George GORDON 8th of Knockespock (2nd line), Burgess of Aberdeen was born about 1650.)
