Catherine McGiddy's birth certificate recorded only the name of her mother Bridget McGiddy, a hawker, and the child was labelled 'illegitimate'. It may be that the mother was unable to produce a marriage certificate to prove she was married, and that the father was not there to sign as father of the child. On 2 September 1863, Bridget McGiddy was the informant of her daughter's birth, and made her X mark - the registrar, John Grimwood, presumably, being the person who wrote the spelling of her surname from the way she pronounced it.

The 1871 census recorded Catherine McConvel, living with Patrick, Bridget and Susan McConvel in Saltcoats Ayrshire. She was noted as the daughter of the head of the house aged, 7 years, and born in Saltcoats.

Katie McBride, daughter of Patrick McConville, was the informant of his death in Dalry, Ayrshire in 1905. Her address then was noted as Dunily Street, Johnstone. ^{1 3 4}
