James Cavenahg was recorded by the 1870 US census living with his family in Cranberry, Venango, Pennsylvania. He was the baby of the family, aged 7 months and had been born in the state.

In 1880 the "Canavagh" family were living in the township of Fairview, in Butler, Pennsylvania. The US census of that year recorded James Canavagh was recorded as aged 7 years and born in Pennsylvania, this despite the fact that he was recorded in the previous census ten years before! He had attended school in the census year. ^{1 3}
