In 1900 William and Annie L. Powell were living in East Franklin, Armstrong county in Pennsylvania, with three daughters and two sons aged from 9 years to 1 year of age. In addition an aunt, Mary severline, and a nephew, Turner H. Steer, were recorded in the household. All were born in Pennsylvania except the aunt who was German-born. William's father had been born in Wales, his mother in Pennsylvania. Both of Annie's parents were born in Germany, as were Mary's. William was a carpenter by trade. The couple had been married for 10 years and had had five children in total.

The 1920 US census recorded Wilbur W. Powell living at 323 East Avenue in Elyria Ward 3, Lorain, Ohio with his five children, including Ida who was married, and two grandchildren, Ida's children Anna and Ruth. Wilbur, a carpenter, was a widower aged 52 years and born in Pennsylvania. All Wilbur's other sons and daughters, apart from 23 year old Ida, were single, and all were born in Pennsylvania. James, aged 25 years, was a tinner; Louise aged 20 years worked in bookkeeping; Anna was 18 years old and an assembler in a motor company; Arthur, the youngest was 15 years old. ^{1 3}
