In 1930 the US Census recorded James M. Powell, his wife Anna, and their children Dorothy, James, Robert and Richard, living in rented accomodation on North Olive Street, Elyria, in Lorain county, Ohio. James was 35 years old and was born in Pennsylvania. His wife was 28 years old and had been born in Northern Ireland. They had been married about 8 years. Anna had become a naturalised American citizen in 1921. James was a "Furnace Installer" in a furnace factory. James was a veteran of WWI.

In the World War II Draft Registration Card of 1942 for James Manon Powell, his place of residence was 514 2nd Street, Elyria, Ohio. he was 47 years old and had been born on 24 May 1894 in Kittaning, Pennsylvania. "Kinezil Tin Shop" on Erie Avenue, Lorain, was noted as his employer's name and address. The registrar's report stated that James was 5 ft 11 and a half inches in height, and 220 pounds in weight. He was a white man with brown eyes, gray hair and a light complexion. The index finger of his right hand was crippled. The date of registration was 25 April 1942.

The 1940 US census for Elyria, Lorain, Ohio recorded James and Anna Powell and their four children living there. James was a tinner in a sheet metal company.

James married Anna Shaw McCULLY, daughter of John McCULLY and Mary GIBSON, about 1921.1 (Anna Shaw McCULLY was born on 12 April 1901 in Dunmurry, Lisburn, County Antrim, Ireland 1 3 4 6 10 11 and died on 15 June 1995 in Elyria, Lorain, Ohio, USA 4 6.)
