  • Marriage (1): MARSHALL, William on 30 August 1864 in Lochee RC Church, Dundee, Angus, Scotland 1

Other names for Helen were VALLEBY, Ellen 3 and VALLEY, Helen.4

  General Notes:

In 1851 Helen Valley was recorded living with her family at 4 Parliamentary Road Glasgow. She had been born in Ireland and was 14 years old. She worked as a factory labourer. This entry is, in all probability, a conflation on the part of the enumerator of Henry Vallely and Helen Vallely. The occupation, place of birth and the age would fit Henry - who is not otherwise included, though he was the informant of his father's death five years later - only the name fits Helen, and perhaps she was 4 years old, as the 1861 census would later suggest she would have been.

Helen Vallelly was recorded as 14 years of age by the 1861 census for Dundee, Angus. She was living then with her mother, her brother Patrick, and her sister Bridget, at 24 Mid Wynd. She had, unlike the others, been born in Glasgow Scotland. She worked as a flax spinster. 2 4

Helen married William MARSHALL, son of John MARSHALL and Helen HOLDEN, on 30 August 1864 in Lochee RC Church, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.1 (William MARSHALL was born about 1845 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Father George Davidson, Catholic Clergyman, was the celebrant. The witnesses were Patrick Vallelly and Jessie Jack.

William Marshall was a mill worker aged 19 years. He lived at Burnside Street Lochee and was unmarried.

Hellen Vallelly was a mill worker too. She was single and 17 years of age. She shared the same address as William. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 1 September 1864 at Lochee, James Waddell registrar. 1
