".... by the 9th July 1601 William (Lauder) had unexpectedly passed away, and Agnes, whom we presume to be his second wife, was seeking assurances (and also on the 13th August following) in the Privy Council that she will not be harmed by the said Margaret Borthwick and her new spouse, Ralph Kerr, nor by Charles Cairncross in Birksneip.
