General Notes:
"James Innes was the son of Robert Innes of Cromy (that is Crombie, in the parish of Marnoch), who was the second son of Alexander Innes of that ilk (died 1491), armour-bearer to James III., by Janet Gordon, daughter of the first Earl of Huntly. James Innes of Rathmakenzie, who was his wife's cousin-german, fell at Pinkie, 1547, and his son Alexander Innes of Crombie, was brutally murdered in Aberdeen, 1580."
from Gight
Note: The Innes laird who died in 1491 was James, not Alexander.
"Patrick Hay (of Ury), by James Innes in Reidhall, his procurator, resigned the annual, in the King's lands genibus flexis, reverentia qua decuit, at Edinburgh, in the hotel (hospitio) of the Bishop of Dunkeld, 2 December, 1531, in favour of Robert Innes of Rothmakenzie. Most of the seals with which the gentlemen on these Inquests attested the retours are gone or sorely injured. That of Robert Innes of Rothmakenzie or Cromy, the Laird's brother, is preserved entire."

James married Catherine GORDON, daughter of William GORDON 1st of Gight and Janet OGILVY.1 2 3 (Catherine GORDON was born about 1500 and died by 1543 8.)
Marriage Notes:
"I think the 'Catherine Gordon of Gight,' who married James Innes of Rathmakenzie, as noted in the Familie of Innes (p. 201, and also in the Great Seal), was a daughter of the first laird, and may have been named after his half-sister, Lady Catherine Gordon, who married Perkin Warbeck."

from Familie of Innes
"James Innes of Rothmackenzie got a charter of the lands of Cromie in 1542, and was afterwards designed of Cromie. He fell in the battle of Pinkie, 1547, having married, first, Catherine, a daughter of Sir William Gordon of Gight, and, secondly, his cousin, Margaret, daughter of Alexander Innes of that Ilk, and Cristina Dunbar. By his second wife only he had issue ... "
from Scots Peerage (vol 7)
"James Innes of Crommey first married Catherine Gordon, daughter of The Hon. Sir William Gordon 1st of Gight. (House of Gordon, I., 184.) The marriage took place prior to 1537, when they had a conjunct infeftment of the Two Part of Rothmakenzie - (Familie of Innes, 28) - which infeftment, proceeding on the Resignation of Robert the father, showed that the marriage must have taken place before his death, circa 1535."

Note:
Other sources place Margaret Innes as the granddaughter, not the daughter of Alexander Innes of that Ilk. She is said to have been the daughter of his son James Innes:
"Catherine (Gordon) died in or before the following year (after 24 May 1543), when a. Papal Dispensation was issued for James's second marriage with a cousin Margaret Innes - (Familie of Innes, 21) - and they had a conjunct infeftment from the Bishop of Moray, of Findrassie 27 April 1545 - (Deeds, XXI., f. 108) - and on 1 August 1545, a Crown Charter of Tullyfoff on the resignation of James Innes of Cromie. (Great Seal, No. 3144.) [....]
In the Seton papers, Margaret is described as 'daughter of Innes of Leuchars,' and this person is evidently James Innes variously designed as 'of' and 'in' Leuchars, and who first appears as 'James Innes, son of Alexander Innes of that ilk' in witnessing a charter dated at Kinnairdy Castle 1 May 1514 - (Gt. Seal, III., 34.) - and he is first designated Leuchars when witnessing Alexander Innes of Plaidds' Discharge for the Third-Part of Rothmakenzie, 10 March 1536. (Familie of Innes, 1100.)"
from The Barony of Crommey
"Margaret, daughter of Innes of Leuchars, and widow of James Innes of Fynnarsie (Seton's 'History of the Setons,' i. 464-5)."
