"James Innes was the son of Robert Innes of Cromy (that is Crombie, in the parish of Marnoch), who was the second son of Alexander Innes of that ilk (died 1491), armour-bearer to James III., by Janet Gordon, daughter of the first Earl of Huntly. James Innes of Rathmakenzie, who was his wife's cousin-german, fell at Pinkie, 1547,
and his son ALEXANDER INNES of Crombie, was brutally murdered in Aberdeen, 1580."

  Marriage Notes:

"I think the 'Catherine Gordon of Gight,' who married James Innes of Rathmakenzie, as noted in the Familie of Innes (p. 201, and also in the Great Seal), was a daughter of the first laird, and may have been named after his half-sister, Lady Catherine Gordon, who married Perkin Warbeck."

from Gight

"Robert (Innes, of Cromy and Rathmakenzie) had two sons: 1. James Innes of Rathmakenzie, married first to Catharine Gordon of Gicht, secondly to Margaret Innes, daughter of Laird Alexander."

James Innes of Rothmackenzie got a charter of the lands of Cromie in 1542, and was afterwards designed of Cromie. from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

Note:

Other sources place Margaret Innes as the granddaughter, not the daughter of Alexander Innes of that Ilk. She is said to have been the daughter of his son James Innes:

"Catherine (Gordon) died in or before the following year (after 24 May 1543), when a. Papal Dispensation was issued for James's second marriage with a cousin Margaret Innes - (Familie of Innes, 21) - and they had a conjunct infeftment from the Bishop of Moray, of Findrassie 27 April 1545 - (Deeds, XXI., f. 108) - and on 1 August 1545, a Crown Charter of Tullyfoff on the resignation of James Innes of Cromie. (Great Seal, No. 3144.) [....]

In the Seton papers, Margaret is described as 'daughter of Innes of Leuchars,' and this person is evidently James Innes variously designed as 'of' and 'in' Leuchars, and who first appears as 'James Innes, son of Alexander Innes of that ilk' in witnessing a charter dated at Kinnairdy Castle 1 May 1514 - (Gt. Seal, III., 34.) - and he is first designated Leuchars when witnessing Alexander Innes of Plaidds' Discharge for the Third-Part of Rothmakenzie, 10 March 1536. (Familie of Innes, 1100.)"

from The Barony of Crommey

"Margaret, daughter of Innes of Leuchars, and widow of James Innes of Fynnarsie (Seton's 'History of the Setons,' i. 464-5)."
