GORDON, Alexander Merchant in Amsterdam, Jacobite 1715 1

  • Born: About 1681

   User ID: X529.

  General Notes:

"Robert Gordon had at least two sons :
1. Robert Gordon, vi. of Cairnfield.
2. Alexander Gordon. On Aug. 16,1711,
mention is made in the Regality of Huntly Inhibitions, which are in the Register House, of 'Alexander Gordon, son of the deceast Robert Gordon of Cairnfield, procreate between him and Eupham Gordon, his spouse.' He may be the same as the Alexander Gordon, merchant, Amsterdam, who was served heir male of provision general to his father, Robert Gordon of Cairnfield May 10, 1718. This process may have been connected with the sale of Cairnfield to Alexander Gordon, W.S."

from Gordons of Cairnfield

"Alexander Gordon of Cairnfield
Son of Robert Gordon, 6th of Cairnfield, appears to have been rather a wild young man. After the '15 he went to Holland and became a merchant in Amsterdam. His father died in 1688, Alex. Gordon acquired Cairnfield in 1718 and disposed of it to his brother-in-law, Alex Gordon, W. S. who had married his sister Elizabeth."

from Notes on Rathven Jacobites

Note: He was in fact son of Robert Gordon 5th of Cairnfield by his second wife, and Elizabeth Gordon was his niece. 1 2
