General Notes: "Deed of Entail, dated 21st October, 1694 (p.26) Research Notes: PREFERRED SUCCESSION Noted events in his life were: 1. Lands of Auchnagatt sold. The lands of Auchnagatt were sold by Patrick Strachan, though when this happened is not know. It was likely to have been in the first ten to fifteen years of the eighteenth century. 2. Glenkindie signed over: from Alexander 8th laird to cousin Patrick Strachan, 1695-1700, Scotland. 11 3. Witness: at baptism of Patrick Desson, 1701, Strathdon parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 12 Old Parish Registers 4. Purchase of lands: to enlarge estate, 1703-1713, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 11 eg 5. Imprisoned: after the Jacobite Rising, Between September and October 1715, Scotland. 13 Memorial of Patrick Strachan of Glenkindy to King George II., found among the Edingight Papers, testifies to Patrick Strachan's adherence to the Protestant and Unionist cause which motivated him to fly south in the crisis of 1715, and the rage this attitude and action provoked in the Earl of Mar. After the "battle of Drmblain", Strachan fell into the enemy's hands, that is the Jacobites', and was imprisoned in Dundee for three and a half months by them. He was taken with other prisoners to Montrose and imprisoned for three days. Afterwards, on foot, he was marched to Stonehaven, where with two others he "broke jayle being afraid to be caried to the Isles." He subsequently assisted the Duke of Argyll in the North, and General cadogan in England. For this, the Rebels punished him by confiscatinf his cattle from Glenkindie "which will infalibly incapasitate his Tennents to labour their ground and consequently bring ruine upon himself and family." 8. Patrick Strachan knighted: and became Sir Patrick Strachan of Glenkindie, 1716-1717, Scotland. On 29 November 1716, he obtained a Crown Charter of all his lands, with sasine on 7 October 1717, and is designated Sir Patrick Strachan of Glenkindie in the deed of Sasine. 9. Appointed: Barrack Master General, 1719, In Scotland. 11 as per Chronicles of Atholl Family, privately printed by the Duke of Atholl. 10. Estate under judicial management, 1726-1738. The complexity of Patrick Strachan's financial affairs was such that after his death in 1726, it took legal authorities in the Court of Session in Edinburgh till 1738 to sort them out. 11. Glenkindie sold, 1738. This took place twelve years after Patrick's death. 12. Charter of sale in favour of Alexander Leith: in favour of Alexander Leith, 12 February 1740. 11 The lands and title of Glenkindie were sold by Sir Patrick Strachan to Alexander Leith, his cousin. Alexander's mother, Margaret, and Patrick's father, Michael, were sister and brother. Patrick married Issobell FORBES, daughter of Mr Alexander FORBES of Ardo, then of Foveran and Margaret HUNTER.1 (Issobell FORBES was born about 1665 and died after 4 February 1715.) Marriage Notes: "Sir Patrick was twice married. His first wife was Isobell Forbes, of what family is not stated, probably of Edinglassie. He had no family by that marriage, and Isobell Forbes died subsequent to 4th February, 1715, for on that date he executed a very elaborate deed of entail..." Patrick next married Elizabeth ALLGOOD. (Elizabeth ALLGOOD was baptised on 3 September 1695 in Simonburn, Northumberland, England 14.) Marriage Notes: "After the death of Isobell Forbes he married an English lady, Elizabeth Allgood, from Northumberland, and by her he had two daughters..." |
