In 1901 the census for Shotts parish recorded Ellan Donnelly living with her husband and two children of 2 years and under at 8 Omoa Square. Ellan was recorded as 25 years of age and had been born in Ireland.

When 'Helen Donnelly' died in 1947 her death certificate recorded her age as 73 years. It also recorded that she was the widow of Patrick Donnelly coal miner. Her parents were deceased. 2 3 4

Thomas McGinn, Ellen's son in law, of 4 Silverburn Crescent, Newarthill, gave notice of her death at Holytown on 5 January 1947 before the registrar, Arnold E. Watt. 4


Ellen married Patrick DONNELLY, son of Patrick DONNELLY and Catherine DONLY, on 11 July 1895 in RC Chapel, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Patrick DONNELLY was born on 16 October 1863 in Shotts parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 5 and died on 21 September 1923 in 93 Mosshall Street, Newarthill, Lanarkshire, Scotland 6.). The cause of his death was epithelioma (bowels) over 4 months.4


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Father Patrick Hackett and the witnesses were Michael McConnachie and Maggie Creaney.

Patrick Donnelly was a quarryman aged 20 years. He was unmarried and lived at Crossgates Cleland. Both of his parents, Patrick Donnelly, a miner, and Catherine Donnelly, were deceased.

Ellen McConnachie was an unmarried woman of 18 years who lived at 35 Omoa Square Cleland. 1
