The 1881 census recorded Hugh living with his widowed mother and working as an ironstone miner. His age was recorded as 18 years of age and his place of birth Chapelhall. He was unmarried.

Hugh Traynor, Mary Rourke's son, who was present where his mother died, gave notice of her death before the registrar at Holytown on 7 June 1889 and made his X mark. ^{2 3}

Hugh married Sarah Ann ROURK, daughter of John ROURKE and Ann RENNY, in 1891 in Holytown, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Sarah Ann ROURK was born on 28 November 1870 in Cleland, Shotts parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland ⁴ and died 5 December 1947 at 6.00 am in 3 Bellside Road, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland ⁵.). The cause of her death was cerebral haemorrhage over 12 days/coma over 2 days.
