James was a toddler of 2 years when the 1881 census was taken. He had been born in 'Clarkstown'.

In 1900 the US census for Cambria County, Pennsylvania, recorded James and Bertha Barrett living in Blacklick township. They had no children as yet. James's date of birth was noted as December 1878, and Bertha's as June 1883, so James was 21 years old and Bertha 16 years old. James was a coal miner by occupation. The census entry recorded his birth and his parents' births all as in Scotland. Bertha had been born in Pennsylvania. Both could read, write and speak English.

In 1910 James Barrett was living in Patton Borough, Cambria County, Pennsylvania with his wife and four young children. He worked as a coal miner. They had had five children, of whom one had died.

The 1920 US Census recorded James Barrett and his family living in Caroline Street, Nanty Glo Borough in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. James recorded as aged 40 years, had come to the US in 1882 and became a naturalised citizen in 1888. He and his father were recorded as being born in Scotland and speaking "Scotch"; his mother, born in Ireland, spoke English! He worked as a labourer in a coal mine. His 80 year old father, John, lived with the family.

James and Bertha Barrett, with three of their children, lived in Railroad Street, Nanty Glo, in Cambria County, Pennsylvania in 1930. Their three children were John, Theodore and James. Their home was rented at $12 per month. James and Bertha were recorded as 51 years and 46 years old. James was a loader in a coal mine. 3 4 7
