  General Notes:

The 1861 census for Old Monkland Western District recorded Robert Sherry aged 4 years living with his family at Carmyle. He had been born in Hamilton and was the second of the four children recorded.

Robert Sherry was recorded as 14 years of age by the 1871 census for Hamilton. He lived with his family at 11 Low Patrick Street in Hamilton, where he was born, and worked as a coal miner.

The 1881 census recorded Robert Sherry living as head of a household in Stonefield, Blantyre, with his wife, Catherine, and his three stepchildren, Matthew, James and Catherine Lindsay. Robert was 23 years old, had been born in Hamilton, and worked as a coal miner.

In 1901 Robert and Catherine Sherry and four of their children were living at 48 Elgin St in Glasgow. Robert was a coal miner.

Robert Sherry, widower, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of Catherine Cornfield's death before the registrar, James Johnston, at Motherwell on 12 April 1916. his occupation was recorded as coal miner. He was Catherine Cornfield's second husband. 2 4 5


Robert married Catherine CORNFIELD, daughter of James CORNFIELD and Catherine DEVINE, on 5 November 1880 in Stonefield, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Catherine CORNFIELD was born in 1855 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 6 and died 11 April 1916 at 7.00 pm in 244 Airbles Road, Motherwell, Scotland.). The cause of her death was gallstones, obstructive jaundice and hypostatic pneumonia.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Reverend Peter Donnelly married the couple and the witnesses were John Coogenes and Margaret Cornfield, both of whom made their X mark.

Robert Sherry, a bachelor, was aged 22 years and of Stonefield Blantyre. He was a coal miner.

Catherine Lindsay was a widow aged 26 years and also of Stonefield Blantyre. She was a cotton factory weaver. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Blantyre on 13 November 1880. 1
