John was recorded with his family in the 1881 census for New Monkland parish. He was 12 years old, a scholar, and had been born in Hamilton.

The 1930 US census recorded John Barrett, his wife Mary M., and their daughter Elizabeth, living in Brady township, in Clearfield County, Pennsyvania. Both parents were recorded as born in Scotland and Elizabeth had been born in Pennsylvania. John was a labourer in a mine. His age was noted as 62 years and his wife's as 57 years. Elizabeth was 28 years old.

In his death certificate of 1940, John Barrett, a widower, was recorded as residing usually at no 4 Franklin Road, Cranberry. His age was noted as 72 years 10 months and 7 days, his date of birth being noted in the certificate as 9 April 1867, and his birthplace as Scotland. His parents' names were recorded as John Barrett and Elizabeth O'Rourk. He was a retired coal miner. ^{2 3}

John married Mary MALONE, daughter of Hugh MALONE and Catherine MOORE. (Mary MALONE was born 19 December 1873 at 2.00 pm in Simpsons Land, Coatdyke, Lanarkshire, Scotland ⁴ and died after June 1930 ³.)
