'George O'Brinn' was a 14 yearold recorded by the 1841 census living with his family in Rawyards near Airdrie. He was the eldest child of seven recorded and was a coal miner. The 1841 entry recorded 'Yes' to the question about living in the county in which the census was being taken, that is that like his brother and sisters he had been born in Lanarkshire.

The 1851 census for Bothwell parish recorded Sarah Vallily, a widow, aged 60 years, living at Whitegree, Holytown, with nine others:
Dennis Vallily, son, 33; Charles Vallily, son, 26; Thomas Vallily, son, 22; Thomas Vallily, grandson, 8; George Obrian, son in law, 23; Bridget Obrian, daughter, 26; John Mckee, nephew, 33; Daniel Mckee, nephew, 26; Hugh Lennon, lodger, 26. All were born in Ireland except George who was recorded as born in Glasgow. The men were coal miners.

In the birth certificate of his son Dennis in 1855, George was recorded as an ironstone miner. He was also recorded as being 28 years old and having been born in Woodside Renfrew. George was the informant of this information and signed his name before the registrar Wm. Landless on May 28 1855. He also stated that he and his wife Bridget already had two sons living.

At 103 Stirling Street in the parish of New Monkland, the 1861 census recorded the household of George O'Brian and his family. George was a grocer. His age was noted as 33 years and his birthplace as Airdrie. His wife, Bridget, was also recorded, and they had four children, a set of twins, Michael and Charles, and two daughters, Sarah and Mary.

George gave notice of the death of his mother-in-law, Sarah Corrigan, in 1860, and of his brother-in-law, Denis Vallely, in 1870.

George O'Brien, son of Mary McCulloch, of 75 Bell Street, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar, Millar Whyte, at Airdrie on 3 February 1875.

George died in 1876. His death certificate recorded him as 'George O'Brien coal miner married to Bridget Vallely'. His recorded age was 48 years. Both of his parents were deceased.

His son Michael was married in 1879. In the marriage certificate George was recorded as a 'coal miner deceased'.

In the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary in 1880, George was recorded as 'coal miner deceased'.

In George's widow's death certificate of 1881 George was recorded as having been a coal miner. The information was provided by his son Michael. 3 4 5 6

  Research Notes:

GEORGE'S BIRTHPLACE

The 1855 birth certificate of his son Dennis recorded George as having been born in Woodside, Renfrew. The 1861 census recorded his birthplace as Airdrie. We know that George himself was the informant in the first instance, but we do not know for certain who was the informant in the second. Therefore until further evidence is found the first will be accepted.

  Medical Notes:

E. M. O'Hear LCPSG certified the causes of death.

Michael O'Brien, George's son, who had been present, gave notice of his father's death before William Whyte, registrar, at Airdrie on 3 July 1876.

George married Bridget VALLELY (DNA Link), daughter of Charles VALLELY in Glebe, DNA Linked and Sarah CORRIGAN (DNA Linked), on 14 February 1851 in St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Bridget VALLELY (DNA Link) was baptised on 26 February 1824 in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland 7 and died 18 April 1881 at 10.30 am in 5 Bell Street, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was anasarca.

  Marriage Notes:

The IGI records the proclamation of banns as 26 January 1851 in Bothwell parish.

St Mary's Hamilton RC Church records recorded the marriage between
George O'Brien and Bridget Vallely in the hand of, and above the signature of, the priest who married the couple, Father Michael Condon:
