   Other names for Mary were HAY, Mary,² McCULLOCH, Mary,² SHIREFF, Mary,¹ SHIRIF, Mary ¹ and SHIRRIF, Mary.¹

  General Notes:

When Mary McCulloch died in 1875 in Airdrie her son George O'Brien gave notice of her death. In his information before the registrar he stated that the name of his maternal grandmother was Mary Hay. This is the only source we have for this name.

However there is on record the birth or christening of children of Andrew McCulloch and Mary Sheriff or Shirrif, first in Renfrewshire at Lochwinnoch and Paisley between 1795 and 1801 and in Barony parish of Glasgow in 1804. One of these children is called Mary McCulloch and she was christened in the High Church parish of Paisley in 1801.

It is of some interest that in the 1841 census entry for this family, which of course does not record the relationships of those listed, there is an entry for a man taken to be a boarder but who may be related to Mary: John Sherrey, aged 30-34 years, a coal miner, born in Ireland.

It is also possible that Andrew McCulloch married more than once. ¹
