The 1881 census recorded Francis, named after his grandfather, living at 20 Carscallan Row Hamilton. He was a scholar whose age was then recorded as 6 years, a little low since he was born in 1873.

In 1891, Francis was living with his parents and siblings and his uncle James at 86 Logans Rows north Motherwell. He was 17 years old and worked as a coal miner, as did his father, his uncle and his brother Andrew. ³
