  General Notes:

Michael was a boy of 7 years, a scholar, when recorded by the 1871 census for Bothwell parish. He lived in a dwelling East of Biggar Road, Chapelhall, with his parents and family. He had been born in Ireland.

In the 1881 census, Michael was aged 18 years and was a coal miner.

It was probably this Michael who was the 'Michael McGunnigal', witness at the marriage of James, his brother, and Mary O'Rourke in 1882.

In the 1891 census Michael was a coal miner living in Chapelhall with his widowed mother and his brother, John. His age was recorded as 26 years.

A Michael McGonagle was a passenger aboard the vessel Siberian travelling from Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland, to New York, arriving 27 May 1891. His point of embarkation was Glasgow but his country of origin was Ireland. His age was noted as 26 years and his occupation as miner. His destination, along with that of other miner passengers on board was Park City, Utah.

Note:

The UK census of 1891 was taken on Sunday 5 April, making it quite feasible that a passenger could have been included in that census, travelled aboard a transatlantic vessel, and arrived New York on 27 May 1891.

The 1900 US Federal Census for the borough of Manhattan, New York, recorded Michael McGonigle as head of a household living at 445 West 53rd Street. In the household were himself, his wife Margaret, his son James and two boarders, Thomas and Ann McGoldrick. All of them except the child James, were Irish born, as were the parents of all of them. Michael was recorded as a white male, born in December 1862 and therefore aged 37 years. He had been married for six years and worked as a stable man. He had had no unemployment in the last year. He was recorded as having immigrated to the US eleven years before, in 1889, and was naturalised. he could read and write. he spoke English. He rented his house.

Michael McGonigal was recorded by the 1910 US Federal Census as head of a household living at 100 West 53rd Street, New York. With him lived his wife, Margaret, his son, James, and no less than six lodgers. Michael, a white male, was recorded as 40 years of age and married 16 years. He was, like his parents, of Irish birth. He had come to the US in 1888 and was a naturalised citizen. His spoke language was English, he could read and write, and he worked as a groom in a stable. He was a house owner.

The 1915 New York census recorded Michael McGonigle, his wife Margaret and their son James, living on West 54th Street in Manhattan. Ten lodgers also lived with them. Michael was a porter in a hotel. James was an elevator operator.

Michael McGonegan, his wife Margaret and son James were living in 1920 at 927 Sixth Avenue, New York, according to the US Federal Census of that year. Five lodgers also occupied the household. Michael was recorded as having arrived in the US in 1887, having been naturalised in 1898, and was now 50 years old. he and his parents were Irish born. He now worked as a doorman.

In 1930 Michael McGonigle and his wife Margaret were still living on 6th Avenue, New York, but at number 1309, according to the federal census. There were also three 'roomers' or lodgers living with them. The family home was rented and the monthly rental was 52 dollars. There was no radio set in the home. Michael was recorded as 69 years old, and his age at first marriage - in his case his only marriage - was 34 years. He and his parents were Irish born. His year of immigration to the US was recorded as 1888 and he was naturalised. He worked as a watchman in a dressmaking establishment.

  Research Notes:

YEAR OF ARRIVAL

There appears to be a mismatch between the actual year of arrival in New York USA and the year Michael or his wife consistently offer as information to the enumerator in each census. A check has been done as far as possible and no Michael McGonigle arrived in New York as an immigrant between 1886 and 1890. 1888 was in itself a traumatic year for Michael's family and may have become a point of reference for him. In that year both Michael's father, James, and his brother, James, died on the same day, James senior during the night of 18-19 January and the younger James in the early evening of the 19 January. In census reporting, years are not always pinpoint accurate. They often reflect the perception the individual has of the period of time in question.
