The 1900 US Federal Census for the borough of Manhattan, New York, recorded Michael McGonigle as head of a household living at 445 West 53rd Street. In the household were himself, his wife Margaret, his son James and two boarders, Thomas and Ann McGoldrick. All of them except the child James, were Irish born, as were the parents of all of them. James was recorded as having been born in New York in September 1897 and was 3 years old.

Michael McGonigal was recorded by the 1910 US Federal Census as head of a household living at 100 West 53rd Street, New York. With him lived his wife, Margaret, his son, James, and no less than six lodgers. James, a white male, was recorded as 13 years of age. He had been born in New York USA. His spoke language was English, he could read and write, and he had attended school in the last year.

A Draft Registration Card from World War I records a James McGonigle, aged 21 years, of 927 Sixth Avenue, New York City, registering for the draft, in the second registration, in June 1918. His date of birth is noted as 21 September 1896 and his place of birth as Brooklyn. His occupation was that of a house servant, but he was unemployed at that time. His father's birthplace was noted as Donegal County, Ireland. The name of his mother, Margaret McGonigle, was given as his nearest relative, her address being the same as his own. He signed his name. The details of physical appearance that were recorded were 'eyes: light blue' and 'hair: auburn'.

Michael McGonegan, his wife Margaret and son James were living in 1920 at 927 Sixth Avenue, New York, according to the US Federal Census of that year. Five lodgers also occupied the household. James was recorded as a single man of 23 years of age who had been born in New York. He worked as a doorman. 1
