The 1900 US Federal Census for the borough of Manhattan, New York, recorded Michael McGonigle as head of a household living at 445 West 53rd Street. In the household were himself, his wife Margaret, his son James and two boarders, Thomas and Ann McGoldrick. All of them except the child James, were Irish born, as were the parents of all of them. Michael's wife, Margaret, was a white female, born in August 1874 and was 25 years old. She had been married for six years and had had one child only who was living. She had immigrated to the USA ten years earlier, in 1890, but was not naturalised. She could read and write, and she spoke English.
Michael McGonigal was recorded by the 1910 US Federal Census as head of a household living at 100 West 53rd Street, New York. With him lived his wife, Margaret, his son, James, and no less than six lodgers. Margaret, a white female, was recorded as 25 [sic] years of age and married 16 years. She had given birth to onechild who was living. She was, like her parents, of Irish birth. She had come to the US in 1890. Her spoke language was English, she could read and write, and she worked on her own account as a lodging houe keeper.
Michael McGonegan, his wife Margaret and son James were living in 1920 at 927 Sixth Avenue, New York, according to the US Federal Census of that year. Five lodgers also occupied the household. Margaret was recorded as having arrived in the US in 1890, having been naturalised in 1898, and was now 48 years old. She and her parents were Irish born. 'None' was the entry for her occupation.
In 1930 Michael McGonigle and his wife Margaret were still living on 6th Avenue, New York, but at number 1309, according to the federal census. There were also three 'roomers' or lodgers living with them. Margaret McGonigle was recorded as 55 years old, and her age at first marriage - her only marriage - was 20 years. She and her parents were Irish born. Her year of immigration to the US was recorded as 1890 and she was naturalised. 'Home' was her entry for her occupation.
By the time of the US Federal Cenus of 1940 for New York, Margaret McGonigle was a widow. She was living at 332 East 66 Street, Manhattan. She was recorded as 72 years of age. She had been born in what by then was the Irish Free State. She had reached grade 8 in education as a child.
