  General Notes:

In the 1851 census for New Monkland parish, an 'Edward Valley' aged 22 was recorded living at Buttrey's or Buthey's Row No 3, Rawyards, near Airdrie. He was a lodger and an ironstone miner, born in Ireland, as were two others a lodger Thomas Dunanghy, 25, and William Valley, 75, a widower and a visitor. These men lived within the household of Patrick and Nancy Haggan. Patrick was the head of the household, an iron miner, aged 38 and born in Ireland, and Nancy was aged 31 and born in Ireland. They had a small son called Patrick aged 4, also born in Ireland.

Agnes, Edward's daughter was born in 1855 and he was the informant of her birth. He made his X mark. The certificate gives details of his and his wife's ages, places of birth, year and place marriage and present family. Edward was then recorded as aged 26 years and an ironstone miner. His birthplace was noted as Lanarigh, County Tyrone, Ireland.

When Mary Ann Valaley was born in April 1857 at Omoa Iron Works her father Edward was the informant of her birth before the registrar Wm. Paterson at Shotts on 27 April 1857 and made his X mark. his occupation was noted as iron miner.

Edward was an iron miner according to his daughter Jean's death certificate in 1858.

The 1861 census for New Monkland in Lanarkshire recorded Edward Vally as head of the household living at 2 South Row. Edward was an iron miner of 33 years of age and had been born in Ireland. With him lived his wife and their 4 children.

In 1862 when his son William died of scarlet fever, Edward was recorded in their death certificates as a collier.

In 1863 when Mary Ann died the family were living at Ballochney and Edward was a collier.

In his death certificate of 1873 Edward was recorded as an ironstone miner, aged 49, and widower of Ellen Queen. His usual residence was Holytown. Both of his parents were already deceased.

Edward's son James married in 1874. Edward was recorded in the marriage certificate as 'coal miner deceased'.

  Research Notes:

LANARIGH

This place has not yet been found for certain. It may be Lanaglug, or Lann na gClog, in Ballinderry parish. Or it may be an Ulster Scots rendering of 'Longfield'. There are two parishes in County Tyrone named East Longfield and a West Longfield, and it may be to one of these that the name given refers. Another possibility is the townland of Laragh.

  Medical Notes:

F.T. Davies, house surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, certified the cause of death.

The informant before the registrar at Glasgow, Daniel Sinclair, on November 5 1873 was Edward's son, James Vallely, of Holytown. He made his X mark.

Edward married Ellen QUIN, daughter of William QUINN and Mary O'BRIAN, on 20 November 1851 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Ellen QUIN was born in 1826 in Glebe, County Tyrone, Ireland 14 15 and died 13 July 1865 at 8.00 am in Brace Row, Shotts Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was spinal disease over 4 months.

  Marriage Notes:

The parish register of New Monkland Lanarkshire recorded the banns of marriage between Helen Queen and Edward Vallolly in October 1851.

The birth certificate of Agnes Vallaley in 1855 recorded her parents as married at Airdrie in 1852.

The marriage was in fact on 20 November 1851. Fr J. Buckley celebrated the marriage and the witnesses were John Abercromby and Sally Vallely.

The earlier date recorded in the IGI was likelt to have been the banns of marriage.

NOTE
Sally Vallely was most probably the sister in law of Edward, Sally o'Brian, married to Edward's brother Charles.
