James Valleley died in the terrible pit explosion that took place at No 2 pit Dixon's colliery in 1877. He was aged 22 years and married to Sarah Crosbie, according to his death certificate. his usual residence was 4 Govan Street Blantyre. Both of his parents were already dead. James' mother 's name was recorded as Jane rather than Ellen.

In the death certificate of his widow Sarah in 1908 James was recorded as having been a coal miner. 1 2

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was John McCay, Catholic priest. The witnesses were Joseph O'Neill and Mary Kane, both of whom made their X mark.

James Vailey [sic], who made his X mark, of Carfin in the parish of Bothwell was a bachelor of 20. He worked as a coal miner. Both of his parents were deceased.

Sarah Crosbey was an unmarried woman of 18 who worked as a steam loom weaver. She too was 'of Carfin' and made her X mark. Her mother was deceased.
