Mary Harkin was aged 8 years, and was a scholar, when recorded by the 1871 census for Whitburn. She had been born in Carfin, Lanarkshire.

The 1881 census recorded Mary acting as housekeeper for her two brothers and one sister at 40 Ann Street Glasgow. She was aged 17 years and unmarried. Her birthplace was noted as Hollyton [sic] Lanarkshire. ^{2 3}
