Catherine Harkin was aged 13 years, and was a scholar, when recorded by the 1871 census in her home at Whitburn. She had been born in Clelland [sic], Lanarkshire.

Catherine was recorded by the 1881 census living at Barony parish Glasgow with her sister and two brothers. She was unmarried and aged 22 years. Her birthplace was Shotts parish, and her occupation chemical worker. ^{1 3}
