  General Notes:

The 1851 census recorded Mary Ann. Her name was noted as 'Maran or Marian Semple'. She lived with her parnts in New Monkland parish of Lanarkshire. She had been born in Ireland and was 6 years old.

In 1871 the census for New Monkland recorded Mary Ann McKillop living at No 15 Avonhead. Her age was recorded as 27 and her birthplace as Ireland.

The 1891 census for new Monkland parish recorded Maryann McKillop [sic] living in Glengowan with her husband, 2 children, and 2 boarders. She was recorded as 47 years old and Irish born.

Mary Ann McKillop was the informant of her father's death at Airdrie in June 1891. She made her X mark. Her address then was noted as Glengowan Airdrie, and the registrar also noted, erroneously, that her relationship with the deceased was that of 'niece'.

In 1908 Mary Ann's mother died. Mary Ann (McKillop), who had been present, was the informant before the registrar at Caldercruix on October 19 1908. 2 3 4 5 6


Mary married Duncan McKILLOP, son of Duncan McKILLOP and Jean MOFFAT, on 31 December 1861 in Free West Manse, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Duncan McKILLOP was born in 1830 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland 2 and died 17 December 1899 at 11.55 am in Glengowan, By Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of his death was dropsy and cardiac failure.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was performed according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. The minister was William Jackson, minister of the Free West Church, Airdrie. The witnesses were James Reid and James Stewart.

Duncan McKillop, who made his X mark, was an unmarried man of 31 who worked as a coal miner. His address was recorded as 6 Craig Street, Airdrie. Both his father and his mother were then deceased.

Mary Ann Semple, who also made her X mark, was a cotton mill worker. She was 18 years old and single. She lived at 8 Craig Street, Airdrie.

The marriage was registered on January 6 1862 at Airdrie, William Landless signing the rgister. 1
