McKILLOP, Duncan ²

   Cause of his death was dropsy and cardiac failure.

  General Notes:

In the 1841 census Duncan was aged 10 years and lived with his parents and 3 brothers in Aitchison Street Airdrie.

In 1851 the family lived at 42 Bell Street Airdrie. Duncan was aged 20 years and worked as a miner. He had four younger brothers and one older brother, along with two older sisters, so he was very much in the middle of the family.

The 1871 census for New Monkland recorded Duncan McKillop, his wife and two children, and three boarders living at No 15 Avonhead. Duncan was recorded as being a coal miner. he had been born in Airdrie and was aged 40 years. The three boarders who were listed were John Land [unmarried, aged 22 years, coal miner, born Legbrannock], Thomas Land [unmarried, aged 15 years, coal miner, born Dalserf], and Patrick Owen [unmarried, aged 21 years, coal miner, born Irvine].

The 1891 census recorded Duncan, his wife and two sons, and two boarders living at Glengowan in the parish of New Monkland. Duncan was recorded in the census entry as aged 60 years and born in Airdrie. It noted he was a coal pit bottomer but was unemployed. The two boarders were John Keenan [ a widower of 26 years, born in New Monkland parish, and a coal miner] and James Dunlop [an unmarried man of 21 years, born in Glasgow, and a coal miner].

When Duncan died in 1899 he was married to Mary Ann Semple. His age was recorded as 54 years. He was a coal miner. ^{3 4 5}

GLENGOWAN

was, and is, outside of the town of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, beside Caldercruix. There was a Calico Print Works - John Glen & Sons-situated at Glengowan.

Alexander McKillop, son of the deceased who had been present,informed the registrar at Airdrie, George Andrew, on 18 December 1899 of his father's death.

Duncan married Mary Ann SEMPLE, daughter of Solomon SEMPLE and Elizabeth WALKER, on 31 December 1861 in Free West Manse, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Mary Ann SEMPLE was born in 1843 in Ireland ^{1 3} and died after 19 October 1908.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was performed according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. The minister was William Jackson, minister of the Free West Church, Airdrie. The witnesses were James Reid and James Stewart.

Duncan McKillop, who made his X mark, was an unmarried man of 31 who worked as a coal miner. His address was recorded as 6 Craig Street, Airdrie. Both his father and his mother were then deceased.

Mary Ann Semple, who also made her X mark, was a cotton mill worker. She was 18 years old and single. She lived at 8 Craig Street, Airdrie.

The marriage was registered on January 6 1862 at Airdrie, William Landless signing the rgister. ¹
