"Moir, James, of Stoneywood, 4th Laird of Stoneywood,
eldest son of James Moir 3rd of Stoneywood and his wife Jean Erskine of Pittodrie. He was born in 1710, and married at Ardross in 1740, his cousin Margaret Mackenzie of Ardross, by whom he had 15 children, most of whom died in infancy except Charles (born 1752) killed in America, and two daughters, Jane and Maria. He was a very active recruited for the Jacobite cause. His house was occupied by Cumberland's men, and their officer was nursed back to health by Mrs Moir. The young Englishman did not forget his debt, and after the Battle of Culloden she received a note wrapped around a stone thrown through her window bearing the words 'Stoneywood is safe'. He eventually escaped to Gottenburgh where his wife joined him, becoming a merchant there. Prince Charles recommended him to the KIng of Sweden and he became a naturalised Swedish subject. He eventually returned to Stoneywood. He died 29 Sept 1784 aged 74, leaving a widow and two daughters. Mrs Moir died 6 Dec 1805 at the advanced age of 96."

James married Margaret MACKENZIE of Ardross, daughter of John MACKENZIE of Ardross, Laird of Dundonnel and Helen ERSKINE, in September 1740 in Ardross, Ross-shire, Scotland.1 2 3 (Margaret MACKENZIE of Ardross was born about 1709 and died on 6 December 1805 3.)

JAMES MOIR, IV. of STONEYWOOD, b. 1710, married at Ardross, in Ross-shire, in Sept, 1740, his cousin, Margaret, daughter of ( ) Mackenzie of Ardross; and had fifteen children, who mostly died children, excepting Charles (the eighth son), b. 1752, entered the British Army and was killed in America."
