By his first wife, Elspet Strachan, he had, besides some sons who died young, 1, Margaret, wife of John Johnston of Newplace, and mother of Sir John Johnston, 4th baronet ; 2, Elizabeth, married, in 1652, to Alexander Leith of Bucharne, nicknamed Hardhead ; 3, Isobel, married, in 1654, to Robert, son of Mr. John Cheyne, parson of Kintore."
