  General Notes:

"Ross Cavanagh" was baptised on St Patrick's day 1861 by Father Parkinson of St Joseph's parish in Glasgow. His sponsors were Matthew Robinson [sic] and Jane Shiels.

In 1861 the census recorded Ross Cavanagh, aged 2 months and born in Glasgow, living with his parents at 102 Possil Road Maryhill.

John and Jane Cavenahg [sic] were recorded living in Cranberry, Venango, Pennsylvania, by the US census of 1870. Both were recorded as aged 28 years old, John as born in Ireland, Jane as born in Scotland. They had five children: Robert, 11 years, John, 9 years, Barney, 7 years, Mary, 3 years, and James aged 7 months. The older children were recorded as born in Scotland, the younger two, Mary and James, as born in Pennsylvania. From the ages of the older sons it would seem that "Barney" is the son known from other documentation as Ross, although he was slightly older in fact than the record here suggests.

The 1880 US census recorded John and Jane Canavagh [sic] with their children living in Fairview, Pennsylvania. John, a labourer, was 42 years old and born in Ireland. His wife kept house; she was 40 years old and had been born in Scotland. They had three sons and three daughters living with them: John aged 20 years, a labourer and Ross aged 18 years, also a labourer, had been born in Scotland. The other four younger children were born in Pennsylvania: Mary aged 12 years, also recorded as a labourer, James aged 7 years, Susannah, aged 6 years, and Jane aged 5 years.

In his death certificate of 1918 there are some discrepancies which should be noted: the date of birth recorded for Ross J. Cavenaugh is noted as 8 March 1864. He died on the 8 March 1918, so it would seem that his supposed age has been deducted from the date of death to provided a date of birth. The name "Ross J." does not appear in early documents for him which name him as Ross only. His mother's birth place is noted as Ireland, and that too is not borne out by earlier documents. Nevertheless this does seem to be the death certificate of this Ross Cavanagh. The death certificate also recorded Ross as a single man of 54 years who was a laborer by occupation. His father's name was noted as John Cavenaugh but his mother's name was not entered. Miss Klingensmith was the informant. 2 3 4 7

  Research Notes:

NAMES OF CHILDREN

There is some confusion about the given names of the eldest boys in this family.

The General Register Office of Scotland (GRO) in Edinburgh holds birth registrations of sons born to this couple as follows:
Robert born 5 July 1855 Old Monkland parish Lanarkshire,
no death recorded for Robert in Scotland
John born 31 December 1858 Milton district Glasgow Lanarkshire
no death recorded for John in Scotland
Ross born 8 February 1861 Barony district Glasgow Lanarkshire
no death recorded for Ross in Scotland
Matthew born 18 March 1863 Barony district Glasgow Lanarkshire
no death recorded for Matthew in Scotland

In the 1861 census, Robert, 5 years, John, 2 years, and Ross, 2months old, were recorded living with their parents in Maryhill, Glasgow.
In October 1865 the Louisiana passenger list recorded Jane Cavanagh, 27 years, arriving in the USA at New York with her three children:
John R. Cavanagh, 7 years, Robert, 5 years, and John, 3 years. The names and ages are seriously confused and confusing here.
In 1870 the US Census recorded Robert, 11 years, John, 9 years, Barney (Ross?), 7 years old living in Venango, Pennsylvania, all born in Scotland.
In 1880 the US Census for Fairview Pennsylvania recorded John, 20 years, and Ross, 18 years, both born in Scotland.
The 1900 US Census recorded John Cavanagh, his wife Margaret, and their three children Agnes, Ross and Regina, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John was recorded as 38 years old and born in Scotland. His birth date was noted as January 1862.
The 1910 US Census recorded John R Cavanagh, with a wife and children of the same name as the 1900 census plus three more children, living in Chicago, Illinois. John's age was noted as 50 years and his birthplace as Scotland.
The 1920 US Census for Chicago, Illinois recorded John R Cavanagh with the same wife and children. John was recorded as 59 years old and born in Scotland.
A 1924 Pennsylvania Certificate of Death recorded John Ross Cavanagh, born 31 December 1865, died 14 September 1924, whose parents were John Cavanagh, born Ireland, and Jane Robertson, born Scotland. The deceased man's age was written down as 58 years and then altered to 57 years. The informant was Ross M. Cavanagh.

Noted events in his life were:

1. Arrival: from Great Britain aboard Louisiana, 13 October 1865, New York City, New York, USA. 8
