  General Notes:

Father James Danaher baptised John in 1859, and his baptismal sponsors were Owen McGrath and Elizabeth McGuire. His surname was indexed and written in the original as "Cavagnagh".

In 1861 the census recorded John Cavanagh, aged 2 years and born in Glasgow, living with his parents at 102 Possil Road Maryhill.

John Cavenahg [sic] was recorded by the 1870 US census for Cranberry, Venango, Pennsylvania, living with his parents and siblings there. He was recorded as born in Scotland and aged 9 years, younger than he actually was. He came in between Robert and "Barney", presumably Ross.

In 1880 the "Canavagh" family were living in the township of Fairview, in Butler, Pennsylvania. The US census of that year recorded John as 20 years old, a laborer, born in Scotland. He had a younger brother, Ross who was 18 years old, and had also been born in Scotland.

In the 1900 US Census John R. Cavanagh, his wife Margaret C. Cavanagh, and their three children Agnes, Ross and Regina, lived in Pittsburgh Ward 14, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. John was recorded as 38 years old and born in Scotland. His birth date was noted as January 1862. His father had been born in Ireland, and his mother in Scotland. John worked in real estate.
Note: This appears to be this John Cavanagh, despite his being named as "John R.", which does not appear in early documents, and despite the recording of his date of birth as January 1862. It is not an isolated example of some confusion regarding ages and dates in the documentation of the family.

John R. Cavanaugh and his wife and family were living in Chicago Illinois in 1910, according to the census of that year. They had seven children from 14 to 2 years of age by this stage, after 17 years of marriage. John was a broker in stocks.

In 1920 the US census recorded that John Cavanagh was still in Chicago and still working as a broker. He and his wife Margaret now had six children at home. John was recorded as 59 years old and his wife as 53. Their children were aged 11 to 22 years.

When John Ross Cavanagh died in September 1924 his actual age was 65 years, but his death certificate recorded him as 58 years old. This was linked to his date of birth being noted as 31 December 1865. He was a married man, and a salesman by occupation. His parents were recorded as John Cavanagh, born in Ireland, and Jane Robertson, born in Scotland. 1 3 4 7 10 11

Noted events in his life were:

1. Arrival: from Great Britain aboard Louisiana, 13 October 1865, New York City, New York, USA. 12

John married Margaret CAVANAGH, daughter of Michael CAVANAUGH and Anna McCABE, about 1893.1 (Margaret CAVANAGH was born on 26 September 1866 in Broadtop City, Pennsylvania, USA 1 13 and died on 30 June 1950 in Los Angeles, California, USA 14.)
