The 1841 census for Incle Street in Paisley recorded Edward Downie living with his mother, brother and sister. He worked as a drawboy and was aged 15 years. His birthplace was noted as Ireland.

In the 1851 census for Glasgow St Mary, an Edward Downie was living with his aunt, Agnes Quigley, and her two children, at 18 Saltmarket Street. He was a cloth capper and hot pressor and was aged 25 years. His birthplace was recorded as Paisley. ^{1 2}
