  General Notes:

The evidence that Patrick belongs in this family is as yet circumstantial but persuasive.

Patrick was one of the two godparents at the baptism of Annabella. daughter of John Quigley and Catherine Liness, by Father James McLachlan at Paisley on 8 November 1818. Agnes Downie's husband, James, did not share the parentage of this John Quigley, but he may have been related. We know James Quigley was associated with Arthur Lynas through the Catholic school in Paisley, and that John was married into that Lynas family.

In 1841 the census for Paisley High recorded a Patrick Downie and a Mary Downie living at 61 Canal Street, Paisley. They may have been husband and wife, or they may have been brother and sister - the 1841 census does not reveal which. Patrick was recorded as being in the 45 to 49 years age range and his occupation was that of hand loom weaver. His birthplace was Ireland. Mary Downie was also born in Ireland and was in the 35-39 years age range. No occupation was noted for her. In the same census another Mary Downie with three children, who would seem to fit being the children of this Patrick Downie, was recorded elsewhere in Paisley, at Incle Street. More information is needed to sort this out.

The 1851 census does offer a connection to that Mary Downie and her children. In Abbey parish there was a Patrick Downie and Mary Downie living, and next door a 23 year old Patrick Downie lived ( very possibly the Patrick 13 years old from Incle Street ). Patrick Downie senior was aged 55 years and a Hand Loom Weaver, thus matching the one mentioned above, living in Canal Street. In 1851 Patrick's birthplace was recorded as Londonderry, Ireland.

This brother was resident in Paisley in 1851. Both brothers helped to recollect details of the family biography for their sister's parish application. Agnes mentioned two brothers in her application for relief: 1 Edward 2 unnamed.
Again it seems distinctly possible that Patrick was the other brother.

A Patrick Downie died in 1859 as a pauper in the Abbey Poorhouse in Paisley aged 64 and a half years, and it is likely that he is the same one who was Annabella's godfather. His death certificate recorded that he was a widower, now a pauper, formerly a labourer. His parents' names do not exactly coincide with those of Agnes Downie but, considering this is a death certificate, and transcribers and copyists have handled the information, and that the information was not given by a family member but by the Poorhouse governor, the information is sufficiently similar to include Patrick with this family. Here are the two lots of parent information to compare:

Agnes Downie b 1812-13 father Edward Downie mother Agnes Drapes/Agnes Dripps
Patrick Downie b 1794-95 father Patrick Downie mother Agnes Gripes 1 2 3 4 5 6

  Medical Notes:

The cause of death was certified by James Aitchison or Hutchison, surgeon, who saw Patrick on 23 April 1859.

John Kirkpatrick, undertaker, certified that Patrick was buried in Paisley cemetery.

The Poorhouse governor, William Brittain, notified the registrar at Paisley, Daniel Cherry, on 25 April 1859 of Patrick's death.

In the 'cause of death' section, the registrar at first wrote 'bronchitis' then this was crossed out. 5

Patrick married Mary DOWNIE MS UNKNOWN. (Mary DOWNIE MS UNKNOWN was born about 1802 in County Tyrone, Ireland 4 7.)
