William's father, James George, a coalminer, was the informant of his birth before the registrar, John Dunlop, at Tarbolton on 21 August 1875. James George had been present where the birth occurred.

William is the second son to have been given this name in this family.

The 1881 census for the village of Whitlett, in the parish of St Quivox, Ayrshire, recorded the widowed James George, living at Blackhouse Crescent with his five sons and two daughters. William George, was the youngest of the children. He was 5 years of age and was at school. His birthplace was Tarbolton, Ayrshire.

The 1891 census recorded a son of James George called William living in his father's home at Bridge Lodge in St Quivox parish Ayrshire. William's age was recorded as 15 years and his birthplace as Tarbolton. He was a railway porter.

The 1901 census for Old Monkland parish Lanarkshire recorded William and Agens George living at 7 Ronald Street, Coatbridge. William was 22 and Agnes 25 years of age, William recorded as born in Annbank and Agnes in Maybole, Ayrshire. William worked as a railway goods guard.
