The 1861 census for Old Monkland Parish recorded Sarah McNarney, aged 17 years, living with her parents and sisters and brothers, at 1 Clarkson's 2nd Land Coatdyke. She was a factory worker and unmarried. She was recorded, in this census, as having been born in Ireland.

Sarah was recorded by the 1881 census for Blantyre, living with her husband and children in Stonefield. Her age was noted as 36 years, and her birthplace as Airdrie.

Sarah was not recorded in the family entry of the 1871 census. She was married by then. She was recorded living at 1 Clarkson Land with her husband Michael, and their children Catherine, Elizabeth, John and James.

In 1891, the census recorded Sarah Higgins and her family living at 29 McAlpine's Building in Stonefield, Blantyre. Sarah was recorded as aged 45 years, and her birthplace was noted as New Monkland, Lanarkshire. Her six children, resident with her, ranged in age from 1 year to 22 years, in a house that was recorded as having two rooms that were windowed.

Sarah Jane was recorded in her death certificate of 1893 as married to Michael Higgins, coal miner, and as aged 48 years. 1 2 5

Sarah was reported in different reports as having been born in Ireland or in Airdrie, Scotland. It has not yet been possible to determine which is the accurate report.

  Medical Notes:

H.G MacPherson MB CM certified the cause of death.

Michael Higgins, widower, who had been present where his wife's death occurred, gave notice of her death before the registrar, George Harris, at Blantyre on 7 October 1893, and made his X mark.


Sarah married Michael HIGGINS, son of Peter HIGGINS and Bridget FALLON, on 24 October 1862 in Lennoxtown of Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland. (Michael HIGGINS was born about 1841 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland 6 and died after 18 July 1897 3.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Father William Geddes RCC. The witnesses were Hugh Dunnion and Peter Gouldie.

Michael Higgins, who made his X mark, was an unmarried man of 21 years. He worked as a coal miner. His address was noted as Cowgate, Kirkintilloch. His father was deceased.

Sarah McNarnie was also unmarried, and worked as a cotton weaver. She was 18 years old and also of Cowgate, Kirkintilloch. She made her X mark.

The marriage was registered at Campsie on 25 October 1862, William Gilchrist being the signing registrar.
