  General Notes:

In the 1871 census John was recorded living with two sisters and a brother and their parents in Iron Work Square Galston. He was a scholar. He was probably called after his grandfather, John Quigley.

John's first daughter was born in 1889 and John gave notice of her birth before the registrar at Galston. John gave his occupation as 'coal miner'.

James Quigley, John's son, was born in November 1890. John was the informant of his son's birth and his occupation was recorded as 'coal miner'. He signed the notice.

In 1891 John was recorded in the census aged 26 years and was employed as a coal miner. The two grandchildren of his parents were very likely his children, as the enumerator recorded him nearest them and out of birth order from his siblings. He was recorded as married but no wife's name was given. (See wife's details)

In 1901 the census for Galston recorded John and Margaret Quigley living with their seven children at 8 Chapel Lane Galston, near where John's widowed mother was then living. John was recorded as being 36 years of age and was a coal miner. All of the family were born in Galston.

It was John who notified the registrar at Galston of his mother's death in 1914.

In his son William's marriage certificate of 1933-4 John was recorded as a coal miner.

When John died in 1936, he was recorded in his death certificate as a coal miner married to Margaret MacNamara. His age was recorded as 71 years. Both of his parents were deceased by then.

John's daughter Annie's death certificate in 1977 recorded him as a 'coal miner deceased'. A similar designation was recorded in the marriage certificate of 1933, and in the death certificate of his daughter Agnes in 1992. 6 7 8 9 10

John Quigley, son of the deceased, was the informant. He notified the registrar at Galston, Margaret C. Smith, on 18 April 1936. His address was recorded as 19 Polwarth Street, Galston.

John married Margaret McNAMARA, daughter of Patrick McNAMARA and Catherine McCLUSKEY, on 29 July 1887 in St Sophia's RC Church, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Margaret McNAMARA was born on 9 May 1863 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland and died on 31 May 1940 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 11.)

John was a bachelor aged 23 of Chapel Lane Galston. He worked as a coal miner.

Margaret was an unmarried woman of 24 of Ironwork Square Galston. She was a domestic sevant. She made her X mark.

The priest who married the couple was Henry S. Laverty and the witnesses were Andrew Graham and Catherine MacNamara.
