The 1841 census recorded "Barnard Twigley" living with his mother, brothers and sister at 114 Main Street, Anderston, in the Barony parish of Glasgow. He was the second oldest child and like his sister Annabella was recorded as being in the 20-24 years age range. He had been born 'outside census county 1841'. Bernard worked as a handloom weaver in cotton. 2
