   Cause of his death was surfalous (probably sulphurous) myelitis.3

  General Notes:

The 1851 UK census for Dalry in Ayrshire recorded Mary Gibson as the head of the household living at 4 Kersland Row. The household consisted of herself, her two sons and two daughters. Thomas, the eldest, was recorded as 18 years of age. His birthplace was Dalry, Ayrshire, and he worked as a coal miner.

When Thomas married Agnes Donaldson in 1862, the marriage certificate recorded him as a widower.

In 1871 the census for Riccarton parish in Ayrshire recorded Thomas and Agnes Gibson, and their four children, living at Portland Row. Thomas, head of the household, was a coal miner by occupation. He was recorded as 32 years of age and had been born in Dalry, Ayrshire.

Thomas Gibson died in 1876 on St Patrick's Day. His death certificate recorded him as 'pauper formerly a miner married to Agnes Donaldson'. His recorded age at death was 42 years. 2 3

  Research Notes:

DIRNCONNER

Thomas Gibson died at 152 Dirnconner, Auchinleck. The modern spelling of this seems to be Darnconner.

MYELITIS

Myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal chord which produces up to 23 symptoms.

The cause of death was certified by Dr Mark Morrison MB CM.

Agnes Gibson, widow of the deceased, gave notice of her husband's death before D. M. Kennedy, registrar, at Auchinleck on March 18 1876. 3


Thomas married Agnes DONALDSON, daughter of William DONALDSON and Elisabeth PORTER, on 31 October 1862 in 5 James Street, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Agnes DONALDSON was born 1840s in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland 2 4 5 6 7 and died after 15 April 1910 5 6 7 8.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. The minister officiating was David Ritchie, minister of Tarbolton. The witnesses were Mary Mcradey (?) and Martha Wilson.

Thomas Gibson was an engine keeper by occupation and a widower by status. He was 27 years old and resident in Tarbolton. His father was deceased.

Agnes Donaldson, who made her X mark, was recorded as 18 years old and resident in Tarbolton. She was a single woman and was a woollen worker.

The marriage was registered on 3 November 1862, John Dunlop being the registrar. 2
