  General Notes:

There is a record of enlistment dated 1891 for Michael Quigley, born in Newcastle in 1873, and aged 18 years. It states he was born in St Mary's parish of Newcastle upon Tyne and worked as a groom. Michael Quigley joined the East Yorkshire Regiment in September 1891, for a Short Service - a period of seven years with the Colours and five years in the Reserve. The details of his medical examination show Michael as 5 feet 5 inches, weighing 1122 pounds, with a chest measurement of thirty and a half inches expanding to thirty three inches. His complexion was fresh, his eyes blue, and his hair light brown. He was a Roman Catholic. he served in the army until 1898, then was recalled in 1899 and served until 1908. He was raised to the rank of Corporal, but his own request reverted to the rank of Private in 1893, not feeling equal to the duties. He served at home, and in South Africa, Egypt and India. He was mentioned in despatches, "vide London Gazette d. 10.9 1901", for having "rendered special and meritorious service". His father is named as Thomas Quigley, Pitgreen Street, Newcastle on Tyne, with the street name later crossed out.

The 1911 census recorded Michael Quigley, aged 36 years, his wife Isabella, aged 31 years, and their three children, Margaret Ann, aged 8 years, Thomas, aged 5 years, and Jessie, aged 3 years, living at 111 Lower Cuthbert St in Gateshead, County Durham, England. Michael worked in a colliery as a "Cartman Above Ground". Michael had been born in Nexcastle upon Tyne, and the others in Gateshead.

Aged 40 years and 6 months [sic], Michael Quigley joined the Special Reserves on 9 September 1914 for one year to work on munitions for the Consett Iron Co. Ltd, County Durham. His address then was 53 Lower Cuthbert Street, Gateshead. He was discharged in 1917, suffering from rheumatism and gastritis. His wife was named as Isabella Quigley of 53 Lower Cutbert Street. Further details were that her maiden name was Armstrong, and that they were married in the Registrar's Office in Gateshead on 4 October 1901, before two witnesses Isabella Hedley and George R. Hedley. Children of the couple were named as Margaret, Thomas and Jennie, born in Gateshead and baptised in St Joseph's RC parish by Father Foxall. A fourth child, Catherine Eliz, was named and her name crossed out, whose year of birth was 1916. 1 3
