QUIGLY, Bernard Potter

   Cause of his death was chest affection (sic) over 11 days and pneumonia over 3 days.²

   Other names for Bernard were QUIGLEY, Barnard,³ QUIGLEY, Barnerd, QUIGLEY, Barny and QUIGLEY, Bernard.^{2 4}

No baptism certificate has been found as yet for Bernard.

The 1841 census for the parish of All Saints in Newcastle on Tyne, England, recorded a household living at Lime Street whose head was Barnerd [sic] Quigley. Living in the household were Barnerd's wife Ann, their three children, and another man, Willm [sic] Quigley, a journeyman potter by occupation, aged in the 20-24 years age range, not born in England or Scotland, but in 'FP', Foreign Parts. Barnerd himself was recorded as aged in the 50-54 years age range and as having been born in Scotland. He worked as a labourer.

In 1851 the UK census for Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, recorded Barnard Quigley as head of a household living in Gardner's Buildings. With Barnard lived his son Thomas aged 15 years. Barnard was recorded as a widower of 69 years of age who had been born in Castle Douglas, Scotland. He was in receipt of parish relief. On the next page to the census entry for Barnard was an entry for his son, William and his family, also living in Gardner's Buildings.

When Bernard died in 1852 his death certificate recorded him as 71 years old and a labourer. ^{2 3}

The 1841 and 1851 census returns give different ages for Bernard. It's likely he was born in the middle to late 1780s.

The causes of Bernard's death were certified, but no note of by whom was entered.

William Quigley, Bernard's son, resident at Gardner's Building, Byker, and present at his father's death, gave notice before the registrar, John Findley on 6 December 1852, and made his X mark. ²

Bernard married Ann NICHOLSON. (Ann NICHOLSON was born about 1791 in Scotland and died between April and June 1849 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England ⁵.)
